Pest Control in Roscoe

Roscoe at a glance

Roscoe is a village in Winnebago County along the Rock River, with 10,983 people at the 2020 census. It covers about 10.4 square miles in the suburbs north of Rockford.

What that means for pests

Roscoe has grown quickly, with newer subdivisions built next to farm fields and woods. Homes on the edge of open land often see mice moving in as fields are harvested in the fall, along with spiders and ground beetles. Sealing gaps around garage doors and utility lines helps. See mice and rats. Fields left bare after harvest send field mice looking for new shelter, and the nearest warm building is often a garage.

Highlander becomes Roscoe

In 1837 the settlement then called Highlander was renamed Roscoe, after Roscoe Township, and the same year it got its first post office. Although settled in the 1830s, Roscoe wasn't incorporated as a village until 1965. The village grew around a rocky river ford across the Rock River, and the riverbanks are still lined with trees and parkland today.

Storms and old wood

In May 2011 an EF-1 tornado hit the Harlem-Roscoe fire station on Willowbrook Road, a reminder of how strong storms can be here. Storm damage to roofs, soffits and trees opens new ways in for insects and rodents, and damp, broken wood attracts carpenter ants. After a storm, check eaves, vents and window frames, and remove or cut back damaged limbs touching the house. If large black ants appear indoors, see ant control.
