Pest Control in Cherry Valley

Cherry Valley at a glance

Cherry Valley is a village of about 8.7 square miles, mostly in Winnebago County with around a tenth in Boone County. It borders the southeast side of Rockford and had 2,905 people at the 2020 census.

What that means for pests

The village sits in the Kishwaukee River valley, near where the river's north and south branches meet. Low, wooded ground near the river means more mosquitoes and ticks, and the busy shopping areas along the highway attract rodents. See mosquitoes and ticks. Restaurants and stores along the busy roads need regular pest service to keep rodents from spreading to nearby homes.

An early settlement

The first settler, Joseph Griggs, arrived with his family on the north bank of the Kishwaukee in 1835. Cherry Valley was incorporated as a village on January 31, 1857, and early on it went by names including Griggs Ford and Graball. Its location on the edge of Rockford means busy roads and retail areas sit just a short distance from quiet residential streets.

Mill town roots

A mill on the Kishwaukee and the railroad's arrival in 1852 were early milestones that shaped the village. Today older homes near the historic center stand alongside newer houses and businesses. Older homes often have crawl spaces and gaps around utility lines where mice get in each fall, while riverside yards need regular tick checks in summer. Trim brush back from the house and clear leaf litter near play areas. For mice moving in, see keeping mice out before winter.
