Ticks in the Rock River Valley: Yard and Family Tips
Forest preserves, parks and wooded riverbanks make the Rock River Valley a great place to be outside, and good tick habitat too.
Request pest controlWhere ticks live
Tall grass, leaf litter, brush and the edges where lawns meet woods. Yards near forest preserves, the river or creeks see the most.
Make the yard less welcoming
Keep grass mowed, rake leaves, remove brush and put play equipment and patios away from wooded edges. A strip of wood chips or gravel between lawn and woods helps.
Protect yourself
Wear long sleeves and pants in tick habitat, tuck pants into socks and use an EPA-registered repellent following its label.
Check after outdoor time
Check skin and hair, especially behind ears, along the hairline, under arms, behind knees and around the waist. Check pets too, and shower soon after coming in.
Removing a tick
Grasp it close to the skin with fine-tipped tweezers and pull straight up with steady pressure. Clean the area and wash your hands. See a doctor if you develop a rash or fever.
Yard treatments
Professional treatments can reduce ticks along wooded edges. See mosquito and tick control.
Pets
Dogs that go into wooded areas or tall grass pick up ticks easily and can carry them indoors. Ask your veterinarian about tick prevention, check pets after walks and brush them outside before coming in.
When to see a doctor
If you develop a rash, fever, aches or tiredness in the weeks after a tick bite, see a doctor and mention the bite. Noting the date and where you were outdoors helps.
Clothes and gear
Put outdoor clothes in the dryer on high heat for a few minutes after coming in to kill any ticks hiding in them, and check backpacks, blankets and gear before bringing them inside.
